Considered the father of our country, George Washington was once a loyal British subject, a soldier during the French and Indian War. Once having joined the Americans years later in their revolt against King George III, Washington soon became the general of the American Continental Army, leading many wins and defeating the British at Yorktown alongside the help of Lafayette and the French forces. After the fighting had ceased and the British surrendered, Washington was offered the position of American King, to which he declined, stating tyranny would only continue under the reign of another king. He was instead inaugurated the first President of the United States of America, The Constitution later following in its publication. When Washington finally retired to Mount Vernon, he took none of the country's pay he otherwise would have certainly received. As a modern figurehead of independence and the American cause, Washington remains the largest-known symbol of Freedom in America today.
